Anti-South Asian Racism Community Discussion
In the last couple of years, Anti-South Asian rhetoric and attacks have been on the rise. In 2024, South Asians were the second most targeted group of hate crimes in Hamilton. These trends accompany a broader rise in anti-immigrant and anti-South Asian attitudes both on social media and in real life. They mark an alarming shift in a country that was broadly seen as pro-immigrant and welcoming of diverse communities.
In these sessions, we will be breaking down how these trends are not new, but deeply rooted in history. South Asian participants will get to share their lived experiences and perspectives and contribute to local community knowledge on how anti-South Asian racism looks in Hamilton, with the aim of filling gaps. These sessions will be guided by info sheets (available in multiple languages including Punjabi, Urdu, Gujarati, and Hindi), discussions questions, and individual / group activities aimed at sharing personal…
