About the Event
Dundurn Castle, also referred to as Dundurn National Historic Site, is a 40-room villa in the Italianate style, constructed in the 1830s on Burlington Heights. This location was previously a fortified military camp set up by the British during the War of 1812. The castle served as the residence of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, a railway tycoon, lawyer, and Premier of the United Canadas from 1854 to 1856. Currently, the castle narrates the story of the MacNab family and the servants who lived and worked there. Visitors can enjoy guided tours of about one hour, led by costumed interpreters who offer personal and engaging insights into the lives of the affluent family living upstairs and the servants working downstairs. Additionally, the castle includes a restored two-acre Kitchen Garden, where interpreters in period attire use 19th-century tools to cultivate food for Dundurn's kitchen.
