Frequently Asked Questions:
1. What dates should I be aware of for the Friendship Families program?
Canadian hosts will open their homes throughout the holiday season. You can choose your preferred date, time, and host family from the available options. This is a wonderful opportunity to create meaningful memories and build lasting international friendships.
2. Who can participate in Friendship Families?
Any international student or alumni is welcome to participate in Friendship Families, as long as there is a host available in your city.
3. Can I bring my Friends and Family?
Yes — they are welcome! However, all guests must register in advance. Please ensure you reserve enough seats at the table for everyone in your group. Children also count as a seat, so it’s important to include them in your registration and inform your host if you plan to bring them along.
4. When will I hear from my host family?
Your host family will contact you directly approximately 3 days to one week before your scheduled visit to confirm all the details.
5. Will transportation be provided?
Yes. To ensure your safety and comfort, host families are asked to provide transportation if needed. Your host will reach out to you ahead of time to coordinate all transportation arrangements.
6. Can I share photos or experiences from my visit?
Absolutely! You are encouraged to share photos and a short description of your experience. These stories highlight the warmth of Canadian hospitality and help inspire future participants in the HIS community. Please be courteous of taking pictures of children and ask host before you post.
7. Who should I contact if I have questions or need to make changes?
If you have any questions, updates, or need to make changes after registering, please contact: info@helpinginternationalstudents.com

Canada is Unique
In Canada we celebrate a number of different cultural holidays. These holidays are often celebrated with food and cultural festivities.
Canada is a big country, so traditions can look different depending on the region and the family. That means every dinner will be a little unique.
Also, Canadians sometimes do things that might feel surprising or different from what you see in Hollywood, since most movies are based on the USA, not Canada.

As an international student living away from family and cultural activities, it means a lot to share a table with local families and get a glimpse of the festivals/events in the host culture!

It was an opportunity for me to meet other amazing international students as well as host family. It felt like being at home away from home. Thank you for doing this.

It made me feel accepted in a foreign land. It was my first Christmas celebration outside my hometown and it was a great experience for me.
